During the months September through December 2000 I did an internship in Cochin, India, together with a good friend. The project's aim was to improve the existing Help Desk of the university, the Cochin University of Science and Technology. It was part of a large-scale project, funded by the Dutch government, to implement and improve the IT facilities at the campus. Besides the construction of a new, fast campus network, several services were improved. For instance, the student's academic results were made available on computers, and a library information system was implemented. The total project had a life-span of more than four years. We stayed at a guesthouse located on the campus for the duration of the entire project. Unlike the common situation in the Netherlands, we had to share a room for that period. We could't really complain though, since our fellow Indian students had to share much smaller rooms actually! We both worked at the computer center, where the entire staff of the Help Desk was located. With power failures not being uncommon (to use an understatement), 'work' was sometimes more of an illusion! The many holidays and strikes didn't help either. Dinner with our supervisor
