The Attripoli waterfall
The Attripoli waterfall
Most of our trips were done in the weekends. One of our first was to the Attripoli waterfall, recommended by one of our Indian friends. It is one of the few attractions of Kerala that is not listed in the Lonely Planet. The three of us were actually the only non-Indians around, so sometimes it was quite hard to distinguish the 'real' attraction here! We also had a real Dutch get-together with several students at a professor's place. It is quite nice to be able to speak Dutch all the time, and eat some real Gouda cheese! The true expat feeling

Wedding dress-up I
Wedding dress-up I
We were invited to join the wedding ceremony of the son of one the employers of the guesthouse. All women dessed-up in nice sarees, while the men simply put on a clean shirt and some long trousers! The ceremony itself was very difficult to understand, but it was nice to experience. Actually a lot of marriages are arranged by the families. It is more of a match between education and social status than anything else really. But they say the whole idea of dating in the West is based upon appearances, which I think is actually a valid arguement! Wedding dress-up II

Traditional Keralite meal
Traditional Keralite meal
The traditional meal in Kerala is rice with curry on a banana leaf. You can still order it this way in a lot of places. It takes practice to eat with one hand, though! But after a while you'll get the hang of it. A lot of the food is vegatarian, but always spicy. Most people eat rice three times a day, a thing I couldn't adjust to personally. But many shops sell sweet bread as well, so together with some Nutella you can make yourself a breakfast similar to the Dutch one. And if you're desparate for something else, there's always the opportunity to go to an steak-house or something similar. Compared to Holland, food is very cheap, even in expensive restaurants.
